SHINE BENEATH THE STAR POWER OF

THE URBANITE POETRY SHOWCASE

DESERT SONG
by
Sandra DeLuca

Magicians of
mescaline dreams,
bring you to
parched Goddess,
brown weeds
adorn her hair,
black stones
slide from lips

You sit
by her,
watch as she
works red clay

She offers you
silver arrow
from her necklace,
you slice
your wrists,
hesitate for
a moment
as red
trickles over
jagged cuts;
then you bleed
into the bowl
she lays at
your feet

River sounds
pulse through
your brain,
memories of
moist kisses,
sweaty palms,
tears

But it's too late--
you belong to
her now,
and the sand
covers you
like a grave

A DATE FOR THE PROM
by
Sandra DeLuca

Nelly Waldruff;
swollen, red pimples
on her face,
stringy hair,
teeth layered
with tartar;
stole gramma's
magic book
from the cellar

A love
spell was
in order;
prince
charming,
and nothing
less

She lit
candles
in a circle;
put on
dress of
silk;
couldn't
get the
zipper
up;
didn't matter--
he'd love
her no
matter what

Chanted to
powers above,
heard soft
growls
from below

Floorboards broke;
cross-eyed,
sharp-fanged
demon broke
through

Gazes locked;
hearts thumped;
black, oily
bile trickled
from scaled lips

He wormed
slimy talons
into her
wart-infested
hand

"True love
is hard
to find,"
he said--
right before
he tore
out her
heart

RAIN DANCE
by
Sandra DeLuca

Hopi danced
on dry,
caked earth;
rattlesnakes
in his mouth

Rain too
far east;
Arizona
sun beats
down

He moved
with slow
drum beat,
serpent tongues
hissed,
licked his ears,
oily eyes
gazed into
his

By nightfall
scales
of blue
and green,
covered
him from
head to toe;
slithered
beneath
August
moon

Rain dreams
turned to
crimson
storm
